Is it expensive to live in Norway?
Prices in Norway tend to be high, but since most students don’t pay for their studies, studying in Norway might still be affordable.
According to the Norwegian Reference Budget for Concumer Expenditures, living costs for a students are calculated to be around 11.000 NOK per month.
Cost of studying in norway
For student from inside the EU/EEA and Switzerland, all education in public academic institutions are free, apart from a semester fee (NOK 700-800) to the Student Welfare Organization. Private institutions charge a small fee, but this is generally very low compared to most countries.
However students from countries outside the EEA (EU and EFTA countries) and Switzerland will often pay a tuition fee between 160.000 and 260.000 NOK.

Average prices
VAT is included in Norwegian prices.
Most Norwegians use mobiles or debit/credit cards to pay, even in small kiosks. VISA and Mastercard are widely accepted and most stores has also implemented cashless payment.
Rent and student Accommodation

Shopping
The general price level on clothing and electronics is 5 - 20 % above the EU average.
Food
Tips are not expected at cafés and bars. Tap water is generally of high quality, so there is no need to buy water in cafes or restaurants.
- Main course at a restaurant: NOK 185 - 310
- Main course at a café/low-cost restaurant: NOK 85 - 200.
- Coffee at a café: NOK 40 - 55.
Student Cafés
- Coffee/Tea: NOK 10 - 20 (Bring your own cup, and it’s cheaper)
- Dinner: NOK 55 - 100.
- Pre-made sandwiches, salads, soups: NOK 30 - 70.
