Ice Halls and Skating Rinks
Bergen has four artificial ice rinks:
Skating Lakes
Lake ice is considered safe to skate on when it’s at least 15 cm thick. With Bergen’s temperate climate, it doesn’t always get cold enough for lakes to freeze so that they are safe to skate on.
Occasionally though, there are cold spells which last long enough to create the perfect ice skating conditions.
In periods of cold weather, Bergen municipality measure the ice on 12 lakes in the area and publishes whether they are safe to skate on or not.
You can also ice skate on other lakes, but then you have to measure the ice thickness yourself.
Remember that you always walk on the ice at your own risk! Just because you see other people on a lake, it doesn’t mean that the ice is safe.
Skansedammen
On the way up to Mount Fløyen you will find Skansedammen. This is a shallow water that easily freezes over.
With a fantastic view over the fjord and the mountains, this is a very special place to skate!

Rent skates and equipment
Many people don’t often ice skate, and feel it’s unnecessary to own their own pair of skates.
At all artificial ice rinks, you can rent skates and other equipment.
But if you’re going to skate on one of the lakes, you can borrow skating equipment completely free.
