Want to explore local history, dig into nature science or admire a piece of art? Visit one of the many museums and galleries in Bergen.
KODE
KODE consists of four art museums in the city center and three composer homes outside the city. The museums are filled with art, crafts, design and music.
Permanenten is the museum for fine craft and design. Here you can find exhibitions like “The Silver Treasure” and the Chinese Collections.
Stenersen is the museum for alternating exhibitions. Built in 1978, the building was made to accomodate the gifts from Rolf Stenersen.
Rasmus Meyer presents the art of Edvard Munch as well as work from the Golden Age of Norwegian art. See the career highlights of artists like J. C. Dahl, Tidemand & Gude og Christian Krogh.
Lysverket shows the work of Nikolai Astrup as well as an exhibition of art from the Renaissance till the 20th century. This section has its own art museum for children, which offers regular workshops (KunstLab).
Troldhaugen consists of the villa (where the composer Edvard Grieg lived with his wife Nina), the Composer Cabin, burial place, museum building and the “Troldsalen” concert hall.
Siljustøl was the home of the composer Harald Sæverud and his wife, Marie. Today the composer´s home consists of a museum section, a private section and great, beautiful outdoor area.
Lysøen, with Ole Bull´s unique summer villa, park and the island itself, is a treasure of a museum. The shuttle boat MS Ole Bull will take you to Lysøen in the summer months. Due to rehabilitation, the museum is closed, but you may still visit the island.
Bergen Kunsthall
Bergen Kunsthall is a centre for contemporary art that hosts exhibitions and events by Norwegian and international artists. Based in the functionalist building designed by architect Ole Landmark, Bergen Kunsthall offers gallery spaces, concerts and club nights, a bookshop and café.
Bergen Maritime Museum
Bergen Maritime Museum explores maritime history, its development and important role in both coastal Bergen and Norway throughout time.
Bymuseet i Bergen
Bymuseet is a cultural history and archelogical museum, that consists of nine museums, which capture various aspects of the development of Bergen Municipality.
University Museum of Bergen – Cultural History (Closed due to rehabilitation)
Among one of the greatest collections of cultural history in Norway. Exhibits Viking treasures, folk art, mummies as well as an impressive variety of church art.
University Museum of Bergen – Natural History
The Natural History Museum reopened in 2019 and exhibits new natural history and research based exhibitions. Dating from 1865, the collections contain everything from birds to fossils and is located in the museum building at Nygårdshøyden, the oldest in Norway. Free entry for UiB students.
The Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene
This museum tells the story about Bergen as a Hansa city. The museum is based on Bryggen and Schøtstuene holds guided tours. It is part of Museum Vest, which consist of eight museums, among them Norwegian Fisheries Museum and Bergen Maritime Museum, both within a walking distance from the city center (Torgallmenningen).
